OvercomingBlanking:VerbalandVisualFeaturesof Prompting in Theatre Rehearsals In: Human Studies, 2023https://doi.org/10.1007/s10746-023-09670-wIntheatrerehearsals,actorscanoccasionallybeseen gettingstuckintheplaytext,whichiscalledblanking.To overcomesuchtextualdifcultiesandcontinuewiththe giventext,apromptercanverbalizethelineinquestion, thuscontributingtoanactor’swordsearchby prompting.Thepaperfocusesoninteractionalpractices bywhichpromptersandactorsinteractionallyresolve blankingsituations.Thisstudy’sdatacomprisesacase collectionof67promptingsituations,whicharetaken froma200-hvideocorpusofarehearsalprocessata professionaltheatre.Thesecasesdemonstratehow theatreprofessionalsorganizepromptingsituationsand howtheynegotiate/sanctionpromptingactionssuchas whentherewasnoblankingbutadramaticpauseor whenthedramaticperformanceisinterruptedduetoa missingprompt.Inadditiontotheaudiovisual recordings,eyetrackingdataofthepersonpromptingis alsousedtodescribethecoordinationofthevisual resourcesinthecontextofmultimodalinteraction analysis.Theanalysissuggeststhatpromptingand blankingpersonsinteractivelyresolveblankingswiththe help of verbal and visual markers.
